"Chios 1822 —
1912: From Massacre to Liberation" Selections
from the Literature of the Period
Book published by the Chian
Federation on the Centennial of the Liberation of Chios
The ninety years between the
Massacres of Chios in 1822 and its Liberation by Greek forces in 1912 are
arguably the most intense in the history of the Greek island of Chios. Between
those two great events, while the lives of the inhabitants were returning to
normal, the great earthquake of 1881 shuttered those lives killing over 5,000
and leaving the island once again in ruins. Due in large part to Eugene
Delacroix’s famous painting, Victor Hugo’s poem and the passionate speeches by
Daniel Webster in the United States Senate, the Massacres of Chios became the
spark which ignited Philhellenism in Europe and the United States leading to
the formation of the independent Greek state. The early descriptions of the
Massacres shocked the civilized world making Chios a necessary stop for the
many American and European travelers of the nineteenth century, who visited the
island and wrote extensively about the history, culture and the rise from the
ashes of the island which was described before its destruction as the
"Fior di Levante" (Flower of the East).
Or mail
your order with a check for $32 (book $25, shipping $7) to the Chian Federation
address.
On the
Centennial Anniversary of the Liberation of Chios, the Chian Federation published
the book "Chios 1822 — 1912: From Massacre to Liberation" which
contains newspaper, magazine articles and book chapters dealing with a period
of Chian history which has not been well documented in the historical
literature of Chios especially in the English language. The Chian Federation
undertook the effort to publish this volume within the context of the Chios
Liberation centennial celebrations as a way to preserve and make widely known
parts of the island’s history which until now have been locked away in the dark
basements of academic libraries and for all intents and purposes would be
considered lost.
All proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Chian Geriatric Foundation
and the Chian Federation Scholarship Fund.
